Front pages: Bhutto killing

Bhutto Assassination - newspapers coverage
A selection of the today’s front pages selected by Robb Montgomery.

I edited this collection from pages available at newseum. I looked for papers that edited with a sense of history, an understanding of the terror component as well as papers that found a profound or unique picture edit as well as those that found unique headline language to match the horror.

I am most drawn to the Rocky Mountain News’ photo choice. That image was not what I was seeing on the TV or Web. It shows a different side to the story and instantly makes the story not about the fact she was killed, but what her death means to Pakistan. When i saw a similar photo in our news meeting, I thought, “Wow, look at all those supporters, I had no idea.” I think lots of Americans would think that too looking out into that sea of people. The photo that a lot of American papers (including mine) used as main art, the man crying out arms outstretched, just didn’t sit right with me for some reason.
