A conversation with Times Modern designer Luke Prowse

Luke Prowse from Research Studios has kindly answered some questions about his work with The Times.

Asked about what the overall process was like in producing a new typeface for The Times Luke says:

As you might imagine, the task was a fairly daunting one. The Times as an institution is world renowned for its content, and unusually also for the rich typographic tradition Stanley Morrison left behind. I had quite a few sleepless nights in the early parts of the project, but drew comfort from Morrison also oddly having been self-taught. From the project outset, we discussed the needs of a new headline font both in terms of economic function and aesthetic, and soon after I began drawing initial ideas. A great inspiration to the process was a former Berthold-Wolpe designed masthead that existed in the mid-50’s.

Fresh face for The Times

The new masthead and mini redesign of the The Times launched today.

Luke Prowse, who designed the new font, and is from Neville Brody’s Research Studios, has provided some dummy pages and a font sample.

The project has been led by Ben Preston, Deputy Editor of The Times, in partnership with Research Studios’ founder Neville Brody who acted as Art Director. Neville was formerly art director of The Face, and lead designer on Actuel, City Limits and Arena magazines. He also worked on the redesign of Times2 supplement in 2005.Collaborating with Neville is lead designer Jon Hill supported by Research Studios’ Luke Prowse. Jon has worked on many large editorial projects, including the design of supplements for The Guardian, the redesign of Swiss newspaper Le Temps and UK business-to-business magazine Media Week. Twenty-three year old Prowse has created the new Times Modern headline font for the newspaper.
