Cases Associats to redesign Daily Mirror

 mirror

Now this will be interesting. Cases Associats, who have worked on, amongst others, Clarin and The Independent, have been given the task of redesigning the Daily Mirror.

From The Guardian:

Daily Mirror editor Richard Wallace has taken the radical step of hiring Spanish design firm Cases Associats to redesign the tabloid.

The firm, which redesigned the Independent papers, has produced a top secret dummy of a new-look Daily Mirror, which only six Trinity Mirror executives have seen.

Wallace’s redesign contains new fonts, graphics and design furniture and has been created in preparation for the switch to full-colour production next year.

However, the Mirror editor is treading cautiously and has elected not to go for a “big bang” relaunch.

Instead, the changes will be introduced over a period in the first few months of next year and Wallace plans to retain the familiar Daily Mirror red-top masthead.

The Mirror redesign team, headed by associate editor Matt Kelly, has been producing dummies with Cases Associats in Barcelona since early November.

One planned feature of the rejigged paper will be clear design differences between important weighty news stories and more lighthearted pieces.

Barcelona-based Cases Associats have a very good reputation in the industry.

The agency redesigned the tabloid Independent, Independent on Sunday and the Scottish freesheet Herald AM.

Cases Associats is known to produce very structured and very modern design - a far cry from the deliberately cluttered traditional British tabloid look.

The last paragraph of the quote is significant in that it will intriguing to see if they stay in the “tabloid” mould or go all clean and modern.

I hope they work on the masthead. Stay a red top but please change it! The big M, the black outline, it’s nasty.

pressgazette.co.uk reports:

News International freesheet thelondonpaper has launched an online London entertainment guide in the form of a Google Maps mashup and plans to bring the service to mobile phones.

The interactive site, thelondonknowledge, includes more than 3,000 reviews of bars and restraurants and 5,000 listings of clubs, theatres and cinemas, plotted on a Google Map.

Users of the site can search by street, venue or postcode and can get travel information for the route between venues via Transport for London’s journey planner service. All the London underground stations and lines are marked on the maps.

Stefano Hatfield, editor of thelondonpaper, said: “The mapping tool will allow readers to find our content in a different way.

“Too often, a website’s content is hidden behind search engines but thelondonknowledge brings all that upfront and instantly shows you where it is. Perfect for a great night out in London.”

The paper said readers of the service will soon be able to add comments to the site, and that it could be made available on mobile platforms in the near future.

News International says thelondonpaper website generated 2.4 million page impressions in November, a 400 per cent year-on-year increase.
