The Sun plans design changes

In response to the Daily Mirror getting a makeover from Cases Associats, The Sun is aiming to implement its design changes first.

The Sun is planning more extensive design changes as it moves to full colour - and is aiming to steal a march on its rival the Daily Mirror by implementing them first.

News International’s flagship daily tabloid is in the process of showing dummies of proposed design changes to media buying agencies. The Sun plans to introduce the revamp over the next two months.

According to one industry source, the planned Sun changes include colour-coded sections and a more modern design that brings the red-top closer in its look to the London Paper, News International’s evening freesheet that was designed by Al Trivino, the art director of News International projects.

But executives at the Sun will not relaunch the paper, having decided that readers shy away from massive design changes. Instead it plans to institute a series of organic design changes, keeping or discarding new initiatives depending on their success.
