Newspapers in Luxembourg redesign to reestablish
Hans-Peter Janisch, SND International Director, has recently done some work on a number of newspapers in Luxembourg. He’s also just appeared at the IFRA Conference in Paris where he talked about the arrival of free newspapers in Luxembourg which has prompted the traditional titles to take a look at what they do, and “become sexier” (as mentioned on Mario Garcia’s blog).
He’s worked as a consultant for media company Editpress for the last 10 years on various projects. The company publishes Tageblatt - the second biggest newspaper in the country, published in German and English; Le Quotidien - the french daily together with Republicain Lorraine from Metz, France; L’Essentiel - the free tabloid paper together with Tamedia, Switzerland and Le Jeudi - a french weekly.

Hans Peter says:
Since the appearance of L’Essentiel on the market, the two other dailies in the company had to establish their position on the market. Le Quotidien is aimed at the young urban commuter, especially from France, coming in to Luxembourg every day. I used Concorde Nova Condensed for the
headlines.
Tageblatt shows a completely different look, as well as a completely different journalistic style. It goes in deep and has to be more structured because of this. Navigation is the key word for this redesign. The headlines are set in Gotham Condensed light.
Le Jeudi is an intellectually different paper. Since it’s a weekly it runs big stories and some brief news.
It’s printed on very white paper and works with a lot of air on the base of a 10 column grid. I used Gotham Light for headlines.
