Huh. Apparently, the folks over at Columbia Journalism Review, the people who chronicle what curmudgeons like me do every day, are reading this blog.
Or at least they’re Googling certain words that make ‘em stumble onto this befuddling corner of cyberspace.
The comments I made about Knight Ridder — the first ones, not the gratuitous TV screen shot so eloquently panned by a friend on the North Coast — were worthy enough, apparently, for them to use in a story to which I’ve so graciously provided the link below. (If you want to click on a link that pops, read the rest of the post, you freeloader.) Continue reading ‘Holy schneikies, someone’s reading this thing…’

So the next step in my transition from Florida back to the Midwest is to seek a place to live.
That’s what the rest of this week brings for me — a flight from Tampa International (TPA) to Detroit Metro (DTW), on Northworst (of course), courtesy of The Detroit News. They’ve treated me quite well, in fact the best I’ve ever been treated as I assume a new position somewhere. In yesterday’s mail, I got a letter from the E&P welcoming me aboard. It probably doesn’t seem like much to Mr. Butler, but to me, it speaks a lot about the organization I’m coming into. Continue reading ‘Looking for new digs’

Since I can’t seem to put the “Knight Rider”/Knight Ridder thing away, here’s another shot, this one a screen grab from the NBC show’s opening sequence. Remember 1982, kiddies?
Looks like the trail’s about over for KRI. See the earlier post for my thoughts on the matter.
(Doesn’t anyone think Tony Ridder looks a little like David Hasselhoff?)

Wait. Knight Ridder?
Oh, that’s right. I shouldn’t be so silly. At 4 p.m. Tuesday, Knight Ridder vanishes into history. The McClatchy Co. will close on its deal to swallow a newspaper chain whose larger papers were, as a group, arguably the best-designed in the industry. Continue reading ‘Farewell, Knight Ridder’

What you do outside the newsroom shouldn’t affect your newspaper, its reputation or its credibility. Not only must you uphold your own reputation, you must preserve and protect the image of the instutition(s) you serve.
Why do I say that? Because I now have a blog, and I realize that while I have a Constitutionally guaranteed right to free speech, I also realize I represent organizations bigger than myself — and right now, in my case, I represent two newspapers — the losing Sarasota Herald-Tribune and the gaining newspaper, The Detroit News. The News, as I’ve said, has a long tradition of stellar journalism, and I’m joining a long line of great newsmen and newswomen. I have not only my name, but my newspapers’ names, to uphold and protect. Continue reading ‘What you do outside the newsroom..’
