Hook ‘em while they’re young

Yip, more evidence newspapers need to reach out to younger readers, not just eat the seed corn.

Ashley Dinges, herself a young ‘un, says all is not lost. We have to reach out to young teens and pre-teens if we’re going to hook those people as readers when they’re older. The study she cites backs that up.

When someone says “all our readers are older,” feel free to backhand them. Repeatedly. There’s no more ignorant thing for a newsman or newswoman to say than that. It’s throwing up the white flag. Start reaching out to younger readers, and they’ll reach right back. Get ‘em while they’re young.
