Ask Mr. Answer Man

OK, so some of you who read this blog (what a pity) may be wondering…

Q: Why the middle initial? Are you that pompous?

A: No, I’m not. I always thought “Doug” was too casual for a byline, and something was missing without the middle initial. I informally go by “Doug,” but I prefer my byline or credit this way. It doesn’t look naked. And while I did start the pursuit of a law degree at one point in my journalism career, it doesn’t make me any bigger a blowhard or any more full of myself than I already am.

Q: OK, so you’re all about that middle initial. So why didn’t you follow the law-school track?

A: Because I couldn’t see myself anywhere but a newsroom once I got that degree. No way could I see myself as a trial lawyer, or as a judicial scholar, or even a public defender. I’m an ink-stained wretch, through and through, born of the small-town newspaper experience, but happy to say I’ve had more than a cup of coffee in the bigs.

Is this a subtle hint?

By now, you may know I’ve returned to Florida. And thanks to the (lack of) diligence by Michigan’s Secretary of State office, my Florida license plate and driver’s license were still valid the whole time I was gone — and I have them back.

Well, almost.

They’re reissuing my vanity plate (with my college nickname), but in the meantime, I have a standard place on the car. The point of this post is the last three letters of the license number — HAQ.

Is someone trying to tell me something? (And in case you didn’t get it: Am I really a hack, after all this time?)

Fortunately, it’s only a placeholder plate….
