End of April we converted from broadsheet to Berliner on a brand new press. Designing the newspaper started half a year earlier in which we were given the opportunity to start with a blank page. We knew that the press we were going to get was printing ‘waterless’ in a very high quality. So we knew we could print color in an unseen quality for newspaper. Our assignment was clear, create a design that’s ready for the years to come and use the possibilities of the press to the max.
I imagine in the US the situation of the newspapers is very much under pressure, like in Europe. Free newspapers, declining advertisement revenues etc. So we set about to reinvent the medium, without becoming a www.newspaper if you know what I mean.
Anyway reactions from the readersmarket have been very favorable, we had a slight rise in sales in the few months, which is considered very good looking at the overall market in Belgium.
Our front page is designed on a colorbackground. (on pdf it does look rather strong compared to print) Every day we try to make a difference in the solution we choose, but the solution is always based on the news. This is an example of an ordinary front page (not to much news).
the size of the viewer is a bit (a lot, in fact) disturbing, is it possible to download the pages as pdf somewhere?
also, next time you should include the country of the paper you write about, just in case not every single one of your readers know all European newspaper titles by head
This is hilarious… You got a price for redesign. Yet I learned a couple of days ago that you (the paper) have accepted Anne Winkeler as the new chef Layout. Let me tell you: you will get serious trouble with all your layouters. This woman made a lot of people quit Het Laatste Nieuws, and can make two stones fight…
It is a sad day for The Morning to learn that this woman has again been hired in another newspaper… She knows nothing about layouting, all she knows is how to humiliate people and how to make the work floor the worst place to be at when she is around.
Ask any layouter who worked for her in the last ten years bij Het Laatste Nieuws about her, and you will immediately know what kind of shit head you got in the house…
She is general called “Ons madam” - in a very negative connotation and had on at least one occasion the whole layout crew of Het Laatste Nieuws in strike. There was almost no paper that day!!!!
