CHARLES APPLE

Charles Apple has been a leader in infographics and news design for more than 20 years.
Previously, Apple was art director of Sporting News Today, graphics director of The Virginian-Pilot, graphics editor of The Des Moines Register and an artist for the Chicago Tribune, The (Raleigh, N.C.) News & Observer, and for small papers in South Carolina and Georgia.
He redesigned The Athens (Ga.) Daily News in 1987, The (Rock Hill, S.C.) Herald in 1990 and two Gannett weeklies in 2002.
He has won numerous awards from the Society for News Design for graphics and graphics reporting. He has taught design and graphics seminars around the country, including multiple sessions for the Southern Newspaper Publishers Association, the Pennsylvania Newspaper Association, the American Press Institute and SND. He has spoken at two annual SND workshops: Minneapolis in 2000 and Orlando in 2006 and was an instructor at an IFRA design and graphics workshop in Manila in 2007.
Apple wrote a column for SND’s quarterly magazine, Design. He blogged for API during he Iraqi war in 2003. He is a moderator and news blogger for VisualEditors.com. He spends way too damn much time online.

Apple, 46, lives in Virginia Beach with his wife and 16-year-old daughter.

Few weeks back Charles Apple wrote about my social networking site www.newspaperdesign.ning.com in his blog .Actually this site is meant for the Indian visual editors and designers.But everyone can join the site.Some great persons like Robb Montgomery,Charles Apple,Tim Frank had joined the site and they are sharing their thoughts.Actually I am inspired from my Guru and friend Robb to start this socialnetworking site.

Robb Montgomery’s two - day workshop on Newspaper Design at Hyderabad was a tremendous experience . There were delegates from India , Sri Lanka , Bangladesh and Singapore. Out of 20 delegates, many of them were attending a Newspaper design workshop like this for the first time- theory plus practical . Robb thought us many new techniques which is useful for our daily work.

The exercise conducted in the workshop was excellent and wonderful. There were two exercises-
1. planning and layout for the page one
2. planning and layout for the centre spread.
After the exercise Robb pointed out the merits and demerits of the pages. It was very interactive. Both were very useful and helped me how to plan and co-ordinate my pages in advance

Having shown many examples and case studies , his lectures on redesign and basics of design was also very well received by the delegates.
Other main thing is that Robb was very open to discussions even after the training time. He solved many delegate’s problem on design which is not in program.
