readership hunt is on
Will we get new readers only by improving the daily’s quality and proffessionalism?
If this is asked to the Indian media the answer is No.
Because of the heavy competition they are facing from the visual media the task of getting new readers is much higher. For the last few years Indian Media has been trying many techniques to get the readers attracted.Indian english dailies like Times of India,Daily news analysis, deccan chronicle and so on reduced the price from 3.50/4.00 t0 one/ two rupees according to the number of pages( one us dollar worth 50 rupees)per issue. No doubt it made an impact on readers. But for the vernacular newspapers it is a difficult proposition. They can’t cut the price.Due to the reduced readership and scarecity of national ads .So they had to think about other options. That’s how kerala newspapers introduced issurance policy scheme for subcribers .For a small premium they are assured issurance coverage of high amount.
Last month we too (kerala kaumudi) lauched this programme and it is showing expected result. Our issurance policy covers accident, daughters wedding, sons education and so on up to seven lakhs

Wow, that’s a really interesting program your paper’s doing, Sajeev.
I wonder — with the newspapers now in a business other than news, how would that affect business coverage? What if, heaven forbid, there was some sort of scandal or financial mismanagement within an insurance company used by the newspapers? Do you think that would lead readers to believe you could not cover the issue fairly and without bias?
