Charles Apple has been a leader in infographics and news design for more than 20 years.
Previously, Apple was art director of Sporting News Today, graphics director of The Virginian-Pilot, graphics editor of The Des Moines Register and an artist for the Chicago Tribune, The (Raleigh, N.C.) News & Observer, and for small papers in South Carolina and Georgia.
He redesigned The Athens (Ga.) Daily News in 1987, The (Rock Hill, S.C.) Herald in 1990 and two Gannett weeklies in 2002.
He has won numerous awards from the Society for News Design for graphics and graphics reporting. He has taught design and graphics seminars around the country, including multiple sessions for the Southern Newspaper Publishers Association, the Pennsylvania Newspaper Association, the American Press Institute and SND. He has spoken at two annual SND workshops: Minneapolis in 2000 and Orlando in 2006 and was an instructor at an IFRA design and graphics workshop in Manila in 2007. He spent nearly three months teaching in South Africa in 2009.
Apple has been a columnist and frequent contributor to SND’s quarterly magazine, Design. He blogged for API during he Iraqi war in 2003. He blogs about visual journalism for VisualEditors.com.
Apple, 47, lives in Virginia Beach with his wife and 17-year-old daughter. In his spare time, he reads 20th century U.S. History, collects Star Trek action figures and writes about himself in the third person.
